Antik Roma'da nüfus sayımı (Census)

Abstract

Nüfus sayımı, bir ülke nüfusuyla ilgili demografik bilgilerin, belli aralıklarla resmî olarak toplanmasıdır. Antik Roma'da, Latince censere fiilinden türemiş olan census kelimesi, hesaplamak, tahmin ve takdir etmek anlamına gelmektedir. Roma'da ilk nüfus sayımı, Roma'nın altıncı kralı Servius Tullius zamanında, toplam nüfusu ve vergiye esas alınmak üzere kişilerin sahip olduğu malvarlığı miktarını öğrenmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Roma nüfus sayımı her beş yılda bir censor'lar tarafından yürütülmektedir.

The word "census" origins in fact from ancient Rome, comingfrom the Latin word "censere", meaning "estimate". In ancient Rome, the registration of citizens combined with the estimation of their property and their assignment to centuriae. The census, which was a register of Roman citizens and of their property for taxation purposes, was first established by Servius Tullius, the fifth king of Rome. The Roman census was carried out by censors every five years.
